Gager wins award
Dorval resident Brad Gager, a forward with the Concordia University varsity Stingers men’s hockey team was named the Quebec University male athlete of the week for the period ending Nov. 19.
Gager, a first-year centre with the Stingers, picked up five points in two games. He had one assist in a 5-5 tie with the Guelph Gryphons on Nov. 17, and followed that up the next day with two power-play goals (including the game winner) and two assists during a 6-3 win over the York Lions. Gager, a first-year accounting major, is a former member of the Quebec Midget AAA Hockey League West Island Lions. He’s one of seven West Islanders on head coach Kevin Figsby’s roster that either played for the Lions or in the Lac St. Louis Hockey Association. Those include Dorval’s Philippe Trahan and David Coughlin, Kirkland’s Ron Smith and Ryan Smith, Dollard des Ormeaux’s Jordan Topor and Beaconsfield’s Christopher Oles. Figsby is a Baie d’Urfé resident.
Lions maintain
winning pace
The beat went on last week for the Dollard des Ormeaux-based Quebec Midget AAA Hockey League Lac St. Louis Lions. The winning beat that is.
The Lions registered three consecutive road victories, defeating the Gatineau Intrépide 5-3 last Wednesday night, the Collège Charles-Lemoyne Riverains 4-1 on Friday night and the Châteauguay Patriotes 4-3 on Saturday night.
The victories raised the Lions’ record to a sparkling 17-3-1, and vaulted them into a first-place tie in the CCM Division with the Laurentides Vikings. Each has 35 points. However, the Lions have a game in hand.
The victory over Gatineau was the 20th of Lions goaltender Matt Dopud’s midget AAA career, making him one of only 73 goalies in league history to achieve that milestone and only the 12th in Lions history.
Head coach Danny Dupont’s troops are off to LaSalle this weekend to participate in the Telus Challenge tournament. A strange quirk in the schedule sees them not playing a home game at the Dollard Civic Centre until Dec. 23, when they entertain the Riverains.
Lakers midget AAA boys
surprise Bullets
The midget AAA boys’ inter-city basketball season is shaping up to be extremely intriguing from a local standpoint.
Both the Pierrefonds-based Brookwood Bullets and Pointe Claire-based West Island Lakers have fielded very competitive squads with little to choose between them. Witness the Nov. 23 tussle between the two sides at Riverdale High School in Pierrefonds. The Lakers came back from a nine-point deficit to register a hard fought 69-66 win.
With one second left on the clock, the Bullets had a chance to possibly tie the game with a throw-in but couldn’t convert.
“That’s the first time I’ve ever beaten Brookwood as a coach, said Lakers head coach Steve Brayne, whose squad has been bolstered by two key additions, Bill Belmihoub and Wesley Caber, both of whom moved to the West Island from the United States.
Belmihoub led the Lakers with 22 points while Cory Simmons led the Bullets with 15.
