A man looking for a good deal got more than he bargained for when he was robbed at gunpoint in Pointe Claire last weekend.

On Saturday at 5 p.m. the victim, a 30-year-old Ile Perrot man, was approached by an individual offering a deal on a new laptop computer at the Fairview Pointe Claire shopping centre. The suspect, an English-speaking black man, about 24 years old, asked him if wanted to buy the laptop, valued at $4,000, for half the price, according to Const. Liliana Bellucci of Montreal police Station 5. The seller said he bought the computer a few weeks earlier and tried to return it, however, the store wouldn’t take it back. The victim declined, but took the man’s phone number anyway. After mulling the offer, the victim phoned the man and said he wanted to buy the laptop. Later, the men met at the Complexe Pointe Claire parking lot to make the transaction, she said. The suspect got into the man’s car holding a box and put a gun to the victim’s head. He took the $2,000 and fled in a getaway vehicle parked nearby that was driven by an accomplice. The man opened the box to find a telephone book, she said.

Robbery recorded

Montreal police are investigating a robbery caught on tape last week in Dollard des Ormeaux. The incident started around 1:45 p.m. last Friday at the Couche-Tard convenience store located at 1350 Sunnybrooke Ave. in Dollard des Ormeaux. Two men walked into the store while the 17-year-old Pierrefonds resident working the cash was serving other customers, said Const. Chantal Castonguay of Montreal police Station 4. The second suspect, a thin masked man who never spoke, went behind the counter and began helping himself to cigarettes while the first suspect pointed a gun at the cashier and asked for the contents of the cash. Both men fled in a beige Dodge truck, with a partial license plate of 667 B, she added. The first suspect was a white, French-speaking man of roughly average size, while the second suspect was a tall, lanky individual. Police have surveillance tapes of the incident, Catonguay said, and they continue to investigate.

Breakfast fundraiser

Montreal police Station 4 will be holding a fundraising breakfast Feb. 2 at Chez Cora restaurant on Sources Boulevard near Brunswick, Const. Claire Parkinson said. The campaign will bring in funds for three non-profit organizations that look after the less fortunate — the West Island Assistance Fund, Sun Youth and Special Olympics — and tickets for the breakfast are available at Station 4 (4139 Sources Blvd.) for $10, or you can arrange to pick up your tickets by calling Parkinson at 514-280-0404. The police will serve the meals and clean up after you and a Montreal radio station will be carrying the event live from the restaurant, she added.
