Islanders survive a scare
Islanders survive a scare
The John Abbott Islanders men’s basketball team have suddenly become the hunted instead of being the hunters. Case in point was last Friday night’s road game in Longueil against Collège Édouard-Montpetit. Head coach Scott Mawhinney’s boys struggled throughout against a determined home team, only to survive for a 63-61 victory. The 63 points was a season low for the Isles. Anthony Moore led the Isles with 14 points and four rebounds while Sasha Louis and Kyle Bernard each had nine points. Marvin Bazile scored eight points and had a game-high 14 rebounds. The win improved the first-place Islanders’ record to 8-1. This will be a busy week for the nationally-ranked Isles, who travel to Laval tonight to take on Collège Montmorency before entertaining CÉGEP Ste. Foy Friday at home at Casgrain Gym. Game time is 8:30 p.m.

Fournier helps Canada win gold

Ile Bizard resident Karl Fournier has a gold medal draped around his neck these days.

The former member of the Quebec Midget AAA Hockey League Lac St. Louis Lions, who went on to enjoy a solid career in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with the Acadie-Bathurst Titans, Cape Breton Screaming Eagles and Lewiston Maineiacs before enrolling at the Université de Moncton last year, was part of the Canadian men’s hockey team that captured gold at the recently completed 23rd Winter Universiade in Turin, Italy. Canada defeated Russia 3-1 on Sunday to earn its third-ever gold medal. Fournier, who earned an assist in the game, finished tied for the Canadian lead in points for the tournament with Rob Hennigar with four goals and five assists.
