Women's centre marks International Women's Day
Luncheon planned for March 8
By Vanessa Comtois
March 8 is International Women's Day and the West Island Women's Centre is already planning festivities to mark the annual celebration.
The occasion, globally acknowledged and made an official holiday in many countries, intends to inspire women and celebrate their achievements. The women's centre attempts to do much of the same. The centre offers educational and health-related courses, provides a support network for women, and promotes women's issues.
The centre's 8th annual International Women's Day event, a luncheon, is planned to recognize the importance of this day with the community.
"We invite members from our centre, our volunteers and [members from other community organizations],'' executive director of the centre, Karen Henchey said.
Representatives from over 40 other non-profit organizations, such as Volunteers West Island and Big Brothers and Big Sisters, will be in attendance. Also participating is guest speaker Diane Sasson, executive director of Auberge Shalom. Located downtown, the shelter provides care for abused women and their children.
I thought it would be interesting to hear what she has to say (on the shelter’s role),” Henchey said.
While the event is not usually open to the general public, Henchey emphasized that the centre will not turn down anyone wishing to attend, including members of all West Island non-profit organizations.
The luncheon will take place from 12-2 p.m. at Valois United Church, 70 Belmont Ave., Pointe-Claire. Childcare will be available.
