Kirkland resident Vanessa Davidson, a five-foot-eight sophomore forward for the McGill hockey Martlets, finds herself in Ottawa this week, hoping to help her team capture its first national championship.
Win or lose, Davidson, who learned her hockey in the Lakeshore system, can look back at a season that has been nothing less than stellar from a person viewpoint. She captured the Quebec University Women’s Hockey League scoring title by seven points, finishing with 15 goals and 16 assists in 17 games. She also led the conference with three shorthanded markers and two hat-ticks to go along with three power-play goals and a pair of game-winners. For her efforts, Davidson, who also broke the McGill single-season points record, was recently named league Most Valuable Player, and a first-team conference all-star. Finally, she also became the fifth member of the Martlets to receive the Club de la Medaille d'Or sports excellence merit award, presented annually to the top players at the university, collegiate, junior major, junior AAA and midget AAA levels, who combine on-ice ability with academics, enthusiasm and sportsmanship.
