Fraud case
Police looking for con man
A 67-year-old Dollard des Ormeaux woman was victimized when she bought a fake book of coupons from a door-to-door con artist earlier this month.
The Andras Street resident bought what she thought was a book of coupons cobbled together to raise money for charity from a French-speaking white male March 31 between 4 and 6 p.m., said Const. Chantal Castonguay of Montreal police Station 4.
The next day, the woman brought her car to a garage listed in the coupon book, but was told no such promotion had ever existed, Castonguay said, adding door-to-door sales are illegal in Dollard des Ormeaux without special dispensation from city administration.
"People need to be careful and not put money down on goods they're not one-hundred-per-cent sure about," she said.
Police continue to investigate the incident after another such fraud occurred in Pierrefonds (Station 3 territory) March 30, Castonguay said.
Arrest made
Police arrested a 26-year-old man last week who is a suspect in at least two residential break-ins in Kirkland. On April 4 at 9:30 a.m., a Nobel Street resident saw a man enter the backyard of his neighbour’s home, said Const. Chantal Morneau. Moments later, the house alarm went off and the man took off running, so the witness phoned police and gave a description of the suspect, Morneau said. At 9:50 a.m., a woman who lives on Courval Street was returning home when she noticed a man running through Meades Park, near her house. As she pulled up to her home she saw that someone had broken in through the front door. She also phoned police and gave a similar description, Morneau said. Minutes later, officers patrolling in the area spotted a man fitting the same description near the Kirkland Arena. The suspect bolted when he saw the officers, who pursued him on foot. Police caught up with the man and made the arrest. Morneau said the Pointe-des-Cascades resident was carrying burglary tools and a small amount of marijuana.
