WINNIPEG - Olympic medal hopeful Mike Brown won the gold medal in the men's 200-metre breaststroke then helped the University of Calgary Swim Club beat its national club record in the 4X100 medley relay to conclude the Summer Nationals swimming competition.
In the 4X100 relay, Dan Langlois, Brown, Adam Sioui and Joel Greenshields clocked 3:41.14 for the gold medal and eclipse its previous national club mark of 3:41.86 set at last year's Summer Nationals.
Brown, Sioui and Greenshields were also on that relay. All three are also tuning up for next month's Olympics.
Vancouver's UBC Dolphins, with Olympians Brian Johns and Brent Hayden, were second in 3:42.79 and the Toronto Swim Club, led by third-time Olympian Andrew Hurd, was third in 3:51.41.
In the men's 200 breaststroke, Brown, a world championship medallist in 2005, was more than a second faster than his prelims time clocking 2:12.98. Marco Monaco of Toronto was second and Mathieu Bois of Montreal third.
Other winners in men's competition were Hayden in the 50 freestyle, Keith Beavers of Waterloo, Ont., in the 200 individual medley and Ryan Cochrane of Victoria in the 1,500 freestyle.
In the women's 200 breaststroke, Annamay Pierse of Vancouver took the gold in 2:27.88 with Martha McCabe of Vancouver second in 2:29.07 and Ashley McGregor of Pointe-Claire, Que., third in 2:32.82.
''It was my best performance of the week so I'm very happy about it," said Pierse. ''I could feel the stroke and I was a lot more in control. After some heavy training, there's always some adaptation at the first meet. The morning finals suit me fine, I feel I have a lot more energy in the morning."
Other winners in women's competition were Tanya Hunks of Vancouver in the 800 freestyle, Julia Wilkinson of Stratford, Ont., in the 200 individual medley, Jen Beckberger of Whitby, Ont., in the 50 freestyle and the Pointe-Claire Swim Club in the 4X100 medley relay.
Wilkinson concluded the meet with four individual gold and two Canadian records.
The Canadian Olympic swim team, which was competing for the last time this week before the Games, leaves Monday for a 13-day preparation camp in Singapore.
''Everybody feels they are ready," said Pierre Lafontaine, Swimming Canada's CEO and national coach. "There is still some tweaking to do but our team swam well this week. I was pleased with how poised they were. It sets us up well for the next step and there's an upbeat feeling on the team."
