CALGARY - A Denver man accused of sexually assaulting girls after he solicited them on the Internet has been deported from Canada back to the United States.
Matthew Clinton Bynum was arrested in Edmonton last November. He had disappeared and fled to Canada while facing five counts of sexual assault on children, Internet luring of a child and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
"He was wanted in the U.S. for alleged crimes on sexual assaults on children," Lisa White from the Canada Border Services Agency said Wednesday.
"We were able to remove him from Canada this week. Now he's been permanently barred from coming back."
Bynum was flown from Edmonton in the custody of border services officers on Monday and handed over to investigators from the Larimer County sheriff's office at Denver International Airport. He's currently being held in custody there on a $100,000 bond.
Bynum had appeared before the Immigration and Refugee Board in mid-November and was ordered deported, but he challenged the decision, so he was not immediately removed.
"He exhausted his appeals. He was in our custody until we were able to remove him and we have to follow due process," White said.
Federal Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day applauded the move, saying it was "consistent with our resolve to protect our families and communities through a quick and efficient removals process."
Day said the federal government has a zero-tolerance level for fugitives from justice.
