ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - Fishermen in Newfoundland are refusing to trap any crab to protest the low price of the shellfish.
Glen Winslow, a St. John's-based fisherman, says the low price combined with the high price of fuel is making it too costly for fishermen to go out to sea.
The price of crab per pound is $1.50, down from $1.61 two weeks ago.
Winslow says fishermen want a price that doesn't fluctuate throughout the crab fishing season.
More than a dozen fishing boats remain docked at St. John's harbour.
Crab has become an increasingly important fishery in the province since the demise of the cod fishery more than 15 years ago.
