DEER LODGE, Montana - The only Canadian on death row in the United States is still hoping the Harper government will change its mind and seek clemency in his case.
Ronald Smith was sentenced to die in 1983 for shooting to death two young men in Montana.
After 25 years at Montana State Prison word that the government was no longer intervening in cases involving Canadians on death row was a kick in the teeth.
Smith says his co-accused in the case cut a deal, was shipped back to Canada and is now free on parole.
He says that is something that Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day and Prime Minister Stephen Harper seem to have conveniently forgotten.
Smith says if he does lose his appeals he's had plenty of time to prepare for his death and it's not something that he's afraid of.
