SEPT-ILES, Que. - Quebec provincial police were led on a wild chase through a residential neighbourhood Tuesday as they tried to catch a man brandishing a sword.
The man was quickly surrounded by officers, who brought him down with pepper spray, a Quebec provincial police spokesman said. Charges will likely be laid.
Police had tried unsuccessfully to negotiate with the man, who is known to them.
Three shots were fired at the man, who at one point bolted across the street in front of TV news cameras, holding his weapon aloft.
Police cars roared up and down nearby streets with their lights flashing and constables advanced cautiously into backyards clutching their semi-automatic service pistols.
The man had been spotted outside his residence, where he had threatened neighbours but he retreated inside and barricaded himself in his apartment when police arrived.
He then leaped through a window and tried to make a break for it before being nabbed.
The man was transported to hospital for first aid treatment after his arrest.
