EDMONTON - Two dozens parents with disabled family members rallied in front of the Alberta legislature over what they say is a crisis in finding qualified staff to help them.
The group Families Who Care says some families are being advised to put their disabled children in foster care or an institution and some disabled adults are being forced into homeless shelters.
Lorrie Baer, a single mother with two disabled children, says the province has failed to provide adequate funding to pay caregivers competitive wages, so many are taking other jobs.
Kim McLeod, whose seven-year-old son has cerebral palsy, says having to use under-qualified caregivers can have disastrous results.
McLeod says in one case, her son's feeding tube had a flow error that no one checked, so he ended up not having any food all day.
Several of the parents and caregivers met for an hour with Children Services Minister Janice Tarchuk prior to the start of the rally.
