TORONTO - One inmate has been found dead in his cell at the Toronto West Detention Centre and an inmate who shared the same cell is in hospital.
The second inmate was taken to hospital with "little or no vital signs" when guards made the discovery at about 7:25 a.m. Tony Brown of the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services says a third inmate was also in the cell, but "appears to be OK."
Brown would not confirm reports that a drug overdose was involved, but added there were "no signs of trauma" or "signs of physical violence."
He says one block of cells at the facility in northwest Toronto remained sealed off as police continue an investigation.
The detention centre is used to hold people remanded into custody awaiting trial or sentencing, or who are serving short sentences.
