Sask introduces mentor program for new nurses in bid to tackle nursing shortage

REGINA - A mentorship program for nurses in being introduced in Saskatchewan in a bid to keep new graduates in the province and tackle a nursing shortage.

The plan is to have graduates work alongside veteran nurses and gain practical experience.

Health Minister Don McMorris says he believes the program will also reduce pressures on experienced nurses and encourage them to stay in the workforce longer.

McMorris admits there's no guarantee new nurses will be able to land a full-time job after spending two to four months in the mentorship program.

About 250 graduates are expected to be eligible for mentoring within the next six months.
