CADOMIN, Alta. - A man suffered serious injuries after he was mauled by a grizzly bear in northern Alberta on Saturday.
RCMP said the man was hiking in the bush northeast of Cadomin early in the morning, and that he hadn't seen the bear or even knew it was nearby before the attack occurred.
Cadomin is on the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains.
Police said in a new release that the man was taken to hospital in Hinton, Alta. in serious but stable condition with numerous cuts to his right leg.
It was not clear in the release if the man escaped from the bear, or if the bear ran away.
Provincial wildlife officials are investigating.
Earlier this month, a woman in Coquitlam, B.C. suffered serious injuries in a black bear attack while she was gardening in her front yard.
Katy Yin, 49, said she could not have survived the mauling if a man had not driven his SUV into the 112-kilogram bruin.
A black bear was also put down last after it broke into a house in North Vancouver, B.C.
