OTTAWA - Concern about possible E. coli contamination has prompted the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to issue a recall for various packages of fresh and frozen ground meat sold at stores around B.C.
No reports of illness are related to the products but, due to the risk of contamination by the potentially life-threatening bacteria, consumers are advised not to eat any of the meat remaining in freezers.
The recall covers bison, prime rib and chuck patties and burgers sold in specific packages and dates at Slaters Meats Ltd. in Victoria.
As well, frozen prime rib and quarter-pound patties and burgers sold at Ozark Meats in Surrey, Heringer's Olde Fashioned Quality in Richmond and at Tango's Gourmet Meats and Jackson's on Granville - both in Vancouver - are recalled.
The alert also covers fresh, lean ground beef sold at Eric's Meat Market in the Kootenay community of Kaslo in early March and between Apr. 16 and May 11.
All the meat was distributed by Trimpac Meat Distributors and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency says further details about specific weights, packaging and dates covered by the recall are available at www.inspection.gc.ca.
