TORONTO - A draft plan aimed at easing traffic gridlock in the Toronto and Hamilton regions is calling for $50 billion to be spent over the next 25 years.
The report, released Tuesday morning by the province's Metrolinx agency, calls for a massive expansion of public transit.
It also calls for rail links to Toronto's Pearson International Airport, subway extensions north from Toronto into York Region, rapid transit lines across Toronto, and improved GO train service.
Metrolinx says when fully implemented, three-quarters of residents in the area will live within two kilometres of rapid transit, compared to less than half now.
Once the draft plan is approved, public consultations are expected to begin in October, with the final version due later this year.
Metrolinx chairman Rob MacIsaac says given the province's commitments to its MoveOntario 2020 transit investment plan, work on many projects can begin within the next year.
