Gov't defends timing of SIU changes, says they're unrelated to upcoming report

TORONTO - Government officials are defending their move to name a new director for the province's civilian police watchdog just days before a report by Ontario's ombudsman.
Premier Dalton McGuinty says he doesn't see the timing conflict and believes the new director of the Special Investigations Unit, lawyer Ian Scott, will pay close attention to the report.
Attorney General Chris Bentley says Scott has the right attitude to deal with any challenges the agency faces.
He says he's looking forward to the report and any changes it suggests to strengthen the SIU.
But he declined to comment on the report - which was given to him last month and is expected to be critical - saying the ombudsman himself should be the one revealing its contents.
NDP critic Peter Kormos says the timing shows contempt for the ombudsman's work and is aimed at blunting any criticism.
