BELLEVILLE, Ont. - Some residents of the Tyendinaga Mohawk reserve near Belleville, Ont., have successfully turned back delivery of a new police station.
Five trucks that tried to deliver the modular station had to turn around and head home Wednesday when protesters blocked the site. Residents are upset that the $1.9 million set aside for the station isn't being used for other projects, such housing and water improvements.
Chief R. Donald Maracle said, however, that the protesters do not represent the majority opinion of the 2,500 people on the reserve.
Maracle says many community members have told him they "don't feel good about being held hostage by protesters."
About $980,000 of the building's cost came from the band while the balance came from the provincial and federal governments.
