Big win for Beaconsfield resident
Beaconsfield resident Thomas Mulcair, of the New Democratic Party (NDP),

won Monday's byelection in Outremont with 11,273 votes.

Mulcair, the former provincial environment minister in Jean Charest's cabinet, crushed Stéphane Dion's federal Liberal's, whose candidate Jocelyn Coulon garnered 6,744 votes. The Bloc Québécois candidate Jean-Paul Gilson walked away with 2,552 nods, while Gilles Duguay received 1,965 votes for the Conservatives.

Outremont's byelection was one of three held in the province on Monday. The Bloc held on to St. Hyacinthe, and the Conservatives won in Roberval, shutting Dion's Liberals out of all three.

Standing by Mulcair after his victory was NDP leader Jack Layton, a Hudson native.
