Interest in what started out as a hobby for Kirklander Brendan Deegan may turn out to be a successful book — and there’s nothing trivial about that.
Deegan recently published a song lyrics trivia book, “More Than Words,” whose topics range from classic rock and TV theme songs to the worst lyrics ever.

Deegan, a teacher who works with troubled teens, decided to take advantage of his summer break to complete the trivia book, something he initially started working on about two years ago.

“Music trivia is something I always liked,” he said. “It first came to mind while on a fishing trip with some of my teacher friends as we were trying to stump each other.” After sending out some e-mails announcing his book, word then spread and he was invited to do some promotional interviews on several radio stations, from CHOM in Montreal, to ones in Kingston, Ont. and as far as California.

“I have about 15 radio things to do, most are phone interviews,” he said last Thursday.

“It’s good exposure. Some have asked for copies to give away as promotions. It’s more interest than I ever expected,“ he added.

The book is aimed at the baby boom generation, with focus on music from the 1960s, 70s and 80s. For references on more recent music, Deegan enlisted the help of his 15-year-old daughter.

When he started on the project, Deegan said some friends suggested doing a trivia game out of the information he had collected, however, he said start-up costs for that were huge, so he stuck with a book.

So far, so good for the book that just came out, but Deegan isn’t sure what to expect down the line.

“I never intended to make money with this, it was more of a hobby,” he said.

“But now, I’m happy with the interest. Still, I’m just starting up. Some people are buying two copies, one for themselves and the other as a gift,” he added.

The book is on sale in a few Montreal stores, including Première Paniers in the Pointe Claire Village, and some Ontario outlets in Kingston, Ottawa andToronto.

It is also available online, through amazon.com, or www.songlyrics.co.nr and also at Deegan’s own link at pages.videotron.com or e-mail him at deegs@videotron.ca.

That's amazing.

On these days everything became "on net". I've become pathetically addicted to those online music trivia games (like the stupid "impossible quiz" I've joined the support group on facebook - and "triviaonnet", for example).

When he says: “It first came to mind while on a f-i-s-h-i-n-g trip ...” - I understand what we all missing.

Today, if I can't go on-line - I can not play...

This book is a great idea!
