A WISH comes through for amateur singers

Amateur vocalists will have a unique opportunity to reach for the stars in a Canadian Idol-style competition soon getting under way on the West Island.

Cheevzz Resto Bar in Beaconsfield, in tandem with entertainment management company Blue Sunshine Music, is launching the first WISH (West Islanders Sing the Hits) contest, a 16-week competition beginning Dec. 1.

“We’re hoping it will become an annual event,” said Cheevzz manager Chuck Bowman, adding the objective is threefold.

“We want to give exposure to aspiring singers, as well as raise the profile of Cheevzz.”

The competition will also raise funds for the West Island Community Resource Centre and the many services it provides through a weekly raffle (one of the main prizes is a trip for two).

“We came up with the idea this summer, and it has since taken on a life of its own. We’re thrilled with the support we’ve been getting,” said Janet Campeau, co-owner of Blue Sunshine Music.

“For 10 consecutive Saturdays, five or six contestants will perform two songs they can choose from a list of 100, ranging from the Righteous Brothers to Shania Twain,” Campeau explained.

“In a gala on March 15, the three finalists will also perform a song written specifically for the competition by St. Lazare singer/songwriter Robert Stefan,” the Pierrefonds resident said.

Stefan, an accomplished artist who has worked with Walter Rossi and Garou, is also emceeing the event.

Top prizes include a guest appearance on his upcoming tour to promote his latest CD, a demo tape produced by Stefan, and a Wicked guitar. The president of Wicked is one of the judges of the contest.

“There is so much talent out there,” Caampeau reflected, adding, “if you have the gift of music you should share it with the world. Everyone has a dream, and they should go for it.”

The deadline to enter the contest, which is open to amateur singers ages 18 and over, is Friday. Further details and application forms are available at www.bluesunshinemusic.com. Forms and raffle tickets are also available during opening hours at Cheevzz, 205 Alton Ave. For more information call 514-695-0151.
