West Island Veterans Awarded for Many Years of Service
BY BRIAN BLOOM
The government of Canada has recognized 12 veterans in Quebec — including two from the West Island — for helping other former armed forces members.
Jean-Louis Denis, from Baie d’Urfe, fought in the Korean War in the RCAF. He has been involved in many causes in support of veterans in Quebec; he is a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and the Air Force Association of Canada. Denis also acts as director of the Air Cadet League. He has won many previous awards for his service.
Michael Bisson, from Dollard-des-Ormeaux, is a veteran of the Canadian mission to Bosnia-Herzegovina in the 1990s. He is a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and has long been a volunteer at Ste. Anne’s Hospital. Bisson is also part of a military band that has played at numerous commemorative ceremonies.
The Ministry of Veterans Affairs Commendation is awarded to veterans (and sometimes others) who have volunteered to help former members of the armed services or have worked towards keeping their memory alive.
