WOWCATS take on the Grinch
BY HOLLIE WATSON
The immortal Dr. Seuss would undoubtedly approve of an upcoming West Island production that pays tribute to his most infamous character.
On Dec. 15 in Beaconsfield, WOWCATS (Way Out West Choral and Theatrical Society) will present A Grinchy Christmas, a musical pageant that will showcase the talents of nearly three dozen vocalists.
“The concert will be divided into two parts. The first will feature both secular and religious Christmas music on a variety of themes,” explained Karen Pearce, the show’s artistic director and one of Wowcats’ founding members.
“The second part will be our version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas. We’ve picked some numbers from the animated TV show and the movie, including You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch, Welcome Christmas, and Trim Up the Tree,” said the Ile-Perrot resident, adding that this ambitious undertaking will comprise about 40 songs overall.
“We’ll also have full costumes for the Grinch segment and a complete set, with Mt. Crumpet, the Cave, scenes in Whoville, and even Max the dog. One of the kids in the group does a very fine Cindy-Lou Who,” Pearce said.
Like the majority of the adults in the ensemble, she has long-standing connections to the amateur musical theatre community, working with such local institutions as Becket Players, Lyric Theatre, Hudson Music Club, and Lakeshore Light Opera.
A portion of the proceeds from the two Saturday shows is earmarked for (a yet to be determined) charity. Last Christmas donations were made to the West Island Palliative Care Centre, the Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue food bank, and a breakfast program for needy Montreal children.
“We might also be putting together a CD of the concert,” Pearce said.
Other plans for the chorale, which was founded in August 2006, tentatively include a show in May. New members are welcome.
A Very Grinchy Christmas will be held at Beaconsfield High School, 250 Beaurepaire Dr., at 2 and at 8 p.m.
“We’re also opening our dress rehearsal to people unable to attend on the 15th.”
