An association representing some local pet rescue groups wants the public to know that any donations they receive go towards helping the animals, mainly for medical or health costs.
"We want to assure people that any funds given to our members are going to the animals," said Johanne Tassé, who established the Companion Animal Adoption Centres of Quebec (CAACQ) earlier this year. Local member groups include Animatch, Rosie Animal Adoption and Blue Ribbon German Shepherd Rescue in Dorval. CAACQ's main objectives are to promote the adoption option with the public and to exchange best practises between members.
For some rescue groups, up to 60 per cent of their funds are used for medical expenses for animals they are caring for, Tassé estimated.
Another key principal with CAACQ members is that all pets are sterilized before they are adopted. Adoption fees can range from $250 to $300.
Opening new pet rescue shelters to deal with unwanted animals is not the real solution, sterilization is, Tassé said, adding "it should be required by law."
As for puppies given as Christmas gifts, Tassé said a good number of them end up in pet shelters by February. "We're getting ready for it," she added.
