Pollock barred from traffic committee
Following the Beaconsfield Volunteer Rescue Squad’s resignation, the air at Beaconsfield’s public council meeting on Monday became tenser when the audience learned District 6 councillor David Pollock would not be reappointed to the city’s traffic advisory committee.
For the second year in a row, Pollock opposed the Beaconsfield’s budget for 2008, disagreeing with council’s decision to extend municipal patrol to 24 hours a day all week long, and setting aside $500,000 in 2008 for a new $4.5 million library project.
A number of audience members voiced their displeasure with council’s decision. “To me, it must be something internal,” said one woman.
When asked by audience members to comment on the move, Pollock said he believed in councillors’ rights to have and express their own opinions. Following the meeting, he told The Chronicle he did not want to make a big deal of council’s decision.
Mayor Bob Benedetti maintained council was not punishing Pollock for opposing council decisions.
“Mr. Pollock has chosen to reject decisions of this council publicly and we didn’t think it was appropriate for him to be an advisor to this council,” Benedetti said following the meeting.
Although he will not be sitting on the traffic advisory committee, Benedetti pointed out council has not barred Pollock from caucus and does not plan to do so either.
