Student journalists shadow Chronicle reporters
The Chronicle newsroom was abuzz with the excitement of fresh faces this morning, as two bright young students from St. Thomas High School with journalistic ambitions came to hang out with the West Island paper's editorial staff to catch a glimpse of the preparation that goes into putting out an issue every week.
"I read a lot of magazines, and I love to read the newspaper," said Megan Dolski, 16, a Grade 11 student. That is why she chose to shadow reporters for their school's job shadowing day, she added.
Her colleague Matthew Coelho, 16, Grade 11 as well, is more of a photojournalism fan himself. He said his eyes opened up to that world after a school project that made him discover the work of Henri Cartier-Bresson, the "father of photojournalism."
Coelho spent part of the day out on the field with reporter Raffy Boudjikanian, taking pictures for a story the latter is working on regarding roofing projects for Lester B. Pearson schools.
Dolski interviewed a source for a rock benefit story under the careful tutelage of Chronicle reporter Elyse Amend.
With an interest in covering arts and life for magazines in the future, Dolski has applied to the liberal arts program in Dawson College. Coelho has applied to the same college's photography program.
