NOVA West Island’s Carousel Support and Bereavement Program recently hosted Camp Carousel, its first camp for youth experiencing loss and change. The setting was Cap St. Jacques in the West Island.
Carol Jonas, coordinator of Carousel wanted grieving youth to be able to have fun with other children in similar situations, noting that there is no camp like this in the Montreal area.
Some recreational camp activities were led by an excellent animator from the park. Arts and and craft sessions, campfires and more were part of the routine led by trained volunteers. Carol, with the help of some of the volunteers led the children through specific grief work activities culminating in a memorial ceremony, after which there was a walk through the woods to the water. A release of butterflies down by the beach was led by Jane Blanchard of Kane and Fetterly who graciously donated the monarch butterflies.
Children commented that the weekend activities had helped them talk about their grief, some for the first time. When asked “which information helped you in your grief work/journey?” one answered “ to be able to talk about my dad” another said “knowing that others have shared in the same experience.” An adult shared “we connected, we laughed and cried. Days were filled with activities, music, interesting conversations and giggles.” All of this has given all of us wonderful memories.
In keeping with NOVA’s charitable philosophy, there was no charge for the camp. Our organization was fortunate to receive support for this event from the West Island Crusade Against Cancer, UPS and other community businesses.
NOVA West Island is a non-profit, charitable organization offering a variety of programs to meet the needs of the community.
