History in the making
The Westpark Cowboys became the first NSFL atom team in a long time to reach the regional finals with a perfect 10-0 record last Saturday under the pouring rain at Glen Francis McHugh Stadium.
The Cowboys defeated the resilient Lakeshore Panthers 14-0 in a remarkable display of defensive football. Both teams managed to consistently stop each other short of the end zone when a touchdown seemed inevitable until quarterback Louis Lavaud scored the game’s first major late in the third. Lavaud would go on to score a second touchdown later in the fourth.
“Kudos to lakeshore, they played a fantastic game,” said ast.coach Jay Pollack, in his third season. “Our kids poured their hearts out there and I’m utterly proud to be part of their season.”
Winning close games is nothing new to coach Pollack’s troops. During the last week of the regular season the Cowboys faced the same Panthers and squeaked by with a 16-14 decision.
The Cowboys spectacular undefeated run took coach Pollack by surprise. After his team lost their exhibition game to the Alexander Park Bills, Pollack began doubting how well his team would do.
“I knew our defence and offence was solid, but we just needed an extra boost, and since we don’t have a lot of players it’s hard to do that,” said Pollack. “But from that point on our veteran players took over, it seemed no one could stop us.”
“Hopefully this year’s run will get parents interested for the next season,” added Pollack.
The Cowboys will host the regional finals at GFM Stadium Saturday.
