Silent auction set for women's centre
For over 30 years, the West Island Women’s Centre has helped improve the quality of life of its members through a wide variety of community programs.
“Our goal is also to alleviate feelings of isolation and to build links among women. We’re a support network,” said executive director Karen Henchey.
On Nov. 7, the centre will host its 13th annual Silent Auction Wine and Cheese at the Church of the Resurrection in Pointe Claire.
“We have several smaller fundraisers throughout the year, but this is the biggest. All our energy goes into this one. In 2007 we raised over $11,000, mostly from the auction. We’re fortunate to have a team of volunteers who come up with an array of donors,” she said.
There will be well over 150 items up for bid next Friday, including sports memorabilia, restaurant certificates, jewelry, artwork donated by local galleries, and more.
“The Montreal Canadiens have donated a stick signed by Saku Koivu, and Pfizer has donated hockey tickets. The Ecomuseum has given us free passes, and the City of Montreal has donated passes to the Biodome.
“There will be something for every budget, and some nice ideas for Christmas gifts,” Henchey said, adding, “we also give a portion of the proceeds to Centraide.”
On the night of the fundraiser, the doors will open at 7:30. Emcee is Sharon Hyland of CHOM-FM. Wine, cheese, and finger foods will be served, and a DJ will keep things lively.
“It makes for a great night out.”
Monies raised support a series of courses, programs, and clubs for both women and children (there are over 300 adult members alone) , most of which are held at Valois United Church.
“Right now we’re hosting a support group on achieving your goals, and on Nov. 4 we’ll again offer a daytime course called making New Connections for recent arrivals to Quebec,” she said.
There is a range of fitness programs, from yoga to Pilates to aerobics, as well as a Sunday night book club, French lessons, and a vegetarian cooking course on Thursdays.
Women with young children can take advantage of preschool gym, music, art classes, and more. There is also free day care while moms attend classes at the centre.
Tickets for the auction are $10, and are best reserved in advance, although any remaining tickets will be sold at the door. The church is located at 99 Mount Pleasant Ave. For tickets or more information about the West Island Women’s Centre, call 514-695-8529.
