Voices for Hope, a 55-voice community choir directed by Douglas Knight, will be performing the Sounds of Broadway at Cedar Park United Church this Saturday and Sunday in Pointe Claire.
The set list, which includes Everything’s Coming Up Roses, Over the Rainbow, Mama Mia, and All That Jazz, is enough to make any self-respecting Broadway fan come knocking on Knight’s door. “The group was founded last fall and there was an immediate response, people come rehearse and don’t want to stop,” Knight said. “Now, there is a waiting list of over 20 people.”

Proceeds from the concert will go to the Cedar Park Youth in Action Group of Free the Children, to build a girls school near Salabwek, Kenya. “There are no girls schools in that area,” Knight said. “There is about a $10,000 cost for this project.”

Since Knight is the music director at Cedar Park United Church, it was natural for him to collaborate with the Cedar Park Youth in Action Group, which was formed in 2003. “Since then they’ve raised over $65,000,” he said . These funds have been donated to Free the Children and have helped build schools in Africa and China, among other projects.

The Sounds of Broadway will be the first concert for Voices for Hope. However, Knight has been involved with music for most of his life. “I was music director for a number of Broadway book shows, like Guys and Dolls and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” he said. However, the Sounds of Broadway will not be staged. “It’s going to be very traditional, there won’t be any costumes per say.”

The Sounds of Broadway will take place at Cedar Park United Church (204 Lakeview Ave., Pointe Claire). There will be a concert Saturday, Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 8 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $20 and $12 for students. There is a $50 maximum per family.
