Local non-profit animal adoption organization, Animatch, is holding its second annual Bark ‘N Brunch fundraiser, on Sunday (Feb. 8) at Bourbon Street West in Pointe Claire.
The success of last year’s Bark ‘N Brunch motivated organizers to keep it on as an annual event. “Last year, we had about 130 people and some 40-odd dogs,” said Animatch volunteer Jo-Anne Massie. “There are 65 reservations already for this year’s Bark ‘N Brunch, so I think it’s going to be a huge success.”
The previous Bark ‘N Brunch managed to raise $3,500 to help fulfill Animatch’s goal of finding each pet its appropriate home, and in 2008, over 252 dogs were adopted through the organization. “Our goal is to raise $5,000 at this year’s Bark ‘N Brunch,” said Massie.
For a $15 entrance fee, Animatch supporters can enjoy a buffet brunch, while animal companions (usually not allowed to enter restaurants, but Bourbon Street West gave the OK for the event) will be provided Barney’s Biscuits dog treats.
The organization relies heavily on volunteers and receives no government funding. “There is a team of about seven or eight volunteers organizing Bark ‘N Brunch and we have about 35 volunteers overall,” said Massie. “If you can’t own a dog, volunteering at Animatch is a great alternative.”
Animals end up at the organization through what Massie refers to as the ‘three Ds:’ death, déménagement, or divorce. “We try to focus on the animal as the customer,” Massie said. “We want to find the best guardian for that dog, we make sure their commitment is there.”
There are 250 to 280 dogs currently housed at the organization, which are all spayed or neutered and given vaccinations before adoption. Many dogs stay only a month, but some have stayed longer. “A lot of people wonder if I’m sad to see a dog leave, but I’m actually so happy to see them go,” said Massie. “I hope to see a lot of (previously adopted) pets at Bark ‘N Brunch.”
Bark ‘N Brunch will be held Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at restaurant Bourbon Street West (1864 Sources Blvd.). All proceeds go to Animatch. Dogs needing homes will be present, but guests are encouraged to bring their own dogs. Volunteers will be there to answer any questions.
