Hudson Village Theatre segues into its 16th winter season on Valentine’s Day with a lively and lighthearted cabaret-style fundraiser.
Moulin Rouge is a heady blend of burlesque, magic, can-can dancing and other elements.

“The setting is Paris at the turn of the (20th) century. It’s an upbeat show, a tip of the hat to a bygone era,” company artistic director Andrew Johnston explained.

“The idea was modelled after a fundraiser I attended years ago in Vancouver, where there is a serious resurgence in reviving classic burlesque as an artistic endeavor. In fact, it has become a wide-spread phenomenon.”

Under the direction of Mary Vuorela, the original concept soon evolved into a musical production as high-spirited as it is colourful, he said.

The evening gets under way at 7 p.m., when members of the audience can enjoy a complimentary beverage and savour a variety of finger foods. The curtain rises at 8, “with an actor playing the Great Zidler, the Moulin Rouge’s host and emcee,” Johnston said.

Highlights of the Feb. 14 showcase include a performance by a magician; a chanteuse will sing a couple of Edith Piaf numbers.

“We’ll also have a small as hoc dance troupe, most of whom have been involved with Village Theatre in the past,” he said, adding Montreal burlesque artist ‘Lola Lamb’ will also entertain.

“Afterwards we’ll be turning the stage over to the audience to use as a dance floor. There will also be a kissing booth and other activities.”

The aim of the production is to recreate the mood of the period, complete with “a sense of antiquity,” he said.

Tickets for the fundraiser for Hudson Village Theatre are $30, and can be reserved by calling 450-458-5361, or for information visit www.villageetheatre.ca.

The theatre is located at 28 Wharf Rd.
