Take a chance on Riverdale’s Mamma Mia!
Since its’ premiere in London a decade ago, Mamma Mia! has become a global phenomenon, and one of the most celebrated musicals in history. Over 32 million theatre-goers world-wide have seen Mamma Mia!, which is set to the music of 70s Swedish super-group ABBA.

It’s a production imbued with both warmth and vitality, according to Josie Arcobelli, director of the upcoming show at Riverdale High School April 2 to 4.

“It’s very upbeat – it gets people in the audience singing along,” said the Pierrefonds resident, who has been at the helm of Riverdale’s annual musicals for the past 10 years.

There are over two dozen songs and medleys woven throughout the production; highlights include timeless hits like Dancing Queen, Take a Chance on Me, Super Trooper, and myriad others.

The story revolves around “a young woman who doesn’t know her father, and after going through her mom’s diary learns that she could have three possible dads. She’s getting married, and wants her father at her wedding, so she invites all three,” Arcobelli said, adding that’s when the fun really begins.

All grade levels are involved, with about 60 students appearing either on stage or labouring behind the scenes.

Musical theatre is a long-standing tradition at the Pierrefonds school; recent productions include Fiddler on the Roof, Moulin Rouge, and Hairspray.

“It’s a community effort, involving teachers and parents, many who help by building the sets or with costumes. Former graduates (a lot of whom go on to become part of the West Island’s thriving musical theatre scene) come back and offer to help out. We also bring in local elementary schools for a special day-time production.”

Mamma Mia! Will be presented Thurs. through Sat. at 7:30 p.m. at 5060 Sources Blvd. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door; call 514-684-9920.
