Raising funds for hospice
Kelly’s Pub is hosting the fourth annual Bob and Diane Horan Memorial Golf Tournament, with proceeds going to the West Island Palliative Care Residence, on June 4.

The tournament was originally an annual friendly with a bunch of Kelly’s customers enjoying a game of golf, said pub owner Allen Fox. Bob and Diane Horan were longtime customers of Kelly’s. She was active with the tournament and when she died four years ago, it was decided to hold a tournament in her honour and her husband chose his charity of choice, the West Island Palliative Care Residence. He died a year later and the tourney was then named after both of them.

To date, the tourney has raised about $25,000 for the Kirkland hospice. Last year, $9,700 was raised, Fox added.

The tourney, run as a Vegas/best ball, is being held at the Vaudreuil Golf Club in Vaudreuil-Dorion. A supper at Kelly’s follows immediately after the match. The cost is $110 per golfer which includes golf, cart, supper, and a gift. About 140 people are expected to participate. People are asked to register by May 29. For more information, call Kellys at 514-694-6438.
Lottery is back

Meanwhile, the West Island Palliative Care Residence is also holding its second annual lottery. Last year, the lottery raised $60,000.

For $100, participants can purchase a ticket for the chance to win a grand prize of $10,000, a second prize of a two-year lease of a Ulsan Hyundai Accent, a third prize of $5,000 and a fourth prize of a 40-inch LCD TV. A maximum of 1,000 tickets will be sold so the odds of winning are one in 250. Tickets can be purchased at the West Island Palliative Care Residence, West Island TD Bank branches, Kelly’s Pub and West Island RBC branches. A list of rules and regulations are posted at www.wipcr.ca. The final draw takes place June 5 at 8 a.m. on CJAD with Andrew Carter.

“The lottery is a great way to get the community involved while having fun at the same time,” stated Teresa Dellar, executive director. “We have always relied on and had such tremendous support from the West Island. Without the people of this community we would not have been able to care for the over 1,100 patients who have passed through our doors.”

The nine-bed home-like facility opened in October 2002. In the last five years, over 200 volunteers have donated more than 100,000 hours of their time. The Quebec government contributes $684,000 annually to the operating budget, and about $1.2 million must be raised each year. For more information on the lottery, call 514-693-1718.
