The City of Dorval has renamed its cultural centre after longtime mayor Peter Yeomans.

About 150 people attended a May 21 ceremony, when a commemorative plaque was unveiled, to inaugurate the ‘Peter B. Yeomans Cultural Centre.’ The cultural centre, which usually hosts exhibitions, is located in front of the municipal library.

Yeomans was Dorval mayor from 1984 to 2001 and he ran the borough during the Montreal mega-city term. He was a city councillor for one term prior to becoming mayor.

“I think it’s recognition for my major commitment to Dorval,” Yeomans said, adding while he was mayor he tried to balance spending between sports, leisure and cultural. “We tried to promote and encourage different (artistic) groups.”

The cultural centre was originally built in 1967 as part of Canada’s centennial year.
