From the Basilica in Rome to St. John’s United Church
St. John United Church will soon join an illustrious list of world famous churches like St. Peters Basilica in the Vatican and Paris’ Notre Dame Cathedral when the rich tenors and baritones of the world touring Palmetto Mastersingers reverberate through the West Island church on Friday, June 19 at 8:00 PM.
Representatives of the 70-man Palmetto Mastersingers choir will join Montreal’s famed Montreal Welsh Male Choir in concert here to deliver a repertoir ranging from Beethoven to the Beatles. Billed as South Carolina’s Musical Ambassadors, the famed male chorus has toured the world. Since their founding in 1981, they have performed in the White House, the National Cathedral in Washington, the Dom Cathedral in Cologne, Germany along with appearances at venues in Russia and China.
Under the direction of Walter Cuttino, who has toured with the late Leonard Bernstein and has more than 1,000 operatic performances and 350 concerts throughout Europe and North America to his credit, the choir delivers a wide and varied range of contemporary and classical music interspersed with the exceptional humour and surprises of it director.
The evening will feature performances by The Palmetto Mastersingers and the Montreal Welsh Male Choir who performed last fall at New York’s Carnegie Hall. At one point in the evening the two choirs will come together to perform a set of songs.
This is the only stop for The Palmetto Mastersinger in Montreal. Tickets are $15. Patrons are advised to purchase their tickets in advance as a concert last September featuring the Montreal Welsh Male Choir and a choir from Wales was sold out.
Tickets are available at the church office, 98 Aurora, Pointe-Claire, 514-697-6459, or by calling Fiona: 514-693-1186; or Dale: RPPR, 23 Valois Bay, 514-426-7137. Profits from the concert support the work of St. John's United Church.
