Cartier on national team

Ringette Canada recently announced the 32 athletes who will represent Canada at this year’s World Ringette Championships, slated for Ottawa Oct. 31 to Nov. 3, and Pierrefonds resident Catherine Cartier is on the list. Cartier, a 29-year-old member of the National Ringette League Montreal Mission made the cut after a selection camp was held earlier this month in Lethbridge, Alta. Team Canada’s playing roster, which will include 22 skaters, will be announced after a training camp scheduled for Whitby, Ont., in May.

Selections begin for karate nationals

The first of three rounds of selection tournaments for the 2007 karate team that will be heading to Vancouver in July to represent Quebec at the national championships was held last month. In the over-18 age category, Dollard des Ormeaux resident Anthony Bhagwandin emerged victorious in two of three fights to capture silver in the 70-kilogram class while in the 16-17 category, Beaconsfield’s Pim Sanders narrowly missed out on a medal match, losing in overtime in the 70-kilogram repechage phase and Pierrefonds resident Shahpur Ahmed, in only his first year of competitive training, dropped his only bout in overtime in the 70-kilogram class. The next two rounds in the selection process occur in February and March.
