Area inter-city basketball fans’ eyes were focused on two major tournaments recently as drama-filled AA and AAA playoffs unfolded on both the boys’ and girls’ sides.
The Pierrefonds-based Brookwood Basketball Association hosted the Montreal Basketball League boys’ tourney at Riverdale High School in Pierrefonds while the Montreal Metropolitan Basketball League’s girls’ tournament unfolded in St. Bruno. Both events took place March 23-25. When all was said and done, no less than seven area clubs had medalled. Three captured gold, including the West Island Lakers midget AAA boys, who defeated Superskillz 77-56 in the final, the Brookwood bantam AAA girls, who beat host St. Bruno 42-37 in the title game and the Brookwood midget AAA girls, who upended Montreal YWHA 59-42 in the championship match.

Meanwhile, three squads earned silver after advancing to the respective finals but coming up short, including the Brookwood mini AAA boys, who dropped a 78-68 decision to Dawson, Brookwood’s bantam AAA boys, who lost 70-62 to Superskillz and the Ile Perrot AA boys, who lost 65-35 to St. Jean sur Richelieu. Finally, the midget AAA Lakers’ girls came away with bronze after defeating St. Jerome 50-35 in the bronze-medal game. Next in line for many of these clubs is this weekend’s provincial championships at Collège Édouard-Montpetit.

Kinsella captures gold

Kirkland resident Chris Kinsella captured gold at the Summit Intercollegiate Wrestling Championship, held March 31 in Calgary. Wrestling in the 74-kilogram class, the former Riverdale Wrestling Club competitor who now wrestles for the Inter-Concordia Club based out of the Claude Robillard Centre, defeated Alberta’s Jesse Nelson in the final. He took the first period by scoring the final point to tie the round, lost the second period 1-0 before grabbing the third period 1-0.

McGill honours area

varsity athletes

McGill University held its 30th annual sports gala award recently and three West Island varsity athletes picked up awards.

Most prominent was Kirkland resident Vanessa Davidson, who received the Gladys Bean trophy as the female athlete who brought the most credit to McGill through athletic achievement. Davidson, 22-year-old physical education major who learned her hockey in the Lakeshore system, was a team and conference Most Valuable Player en route to earning All-Canadian honours. The five-foot-eight centre won the Quebec-league scoring crown with 15 goals and 31 points in 17 games. Overall, she posted a

39-29-68 dossier in 41 contests, establishing single-season McGill records in goals, assists and points. She also set McGill marks for most power play (16) and shorthanded (7) goals. Meanwhile, Kirkland resident Michael Tomasetta was named MVP for the Redbirds baseball team while Kirkland’s Catherine Scott and Senneville’s Jaimie Scholefield were named MVP for the women’s and men’s soccer teams. The Redbirds, whose coaching staff included manager Ernie D’Alessandro, a Pointe Claire resident and first base/bench coach Jason Starr, a Dollard des Ormeaux resident, received the Harry Griffiths trophy as the non-funded club that best combines good performance with solid administrative proficiency.

Horner, Oriwol

qualify for Pan Am Games

Stephanie Horner of the Beaconsfield Bluefins and Tobias Oriwol of the Pointe Claire Swim Club have both earned spots on the Canadian swim team scheduled to compete at this summer’s Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Both did so at the recently held Canadian Spring Nationals, held March 21-25 in Victoria, where Horner won gold in the 200- and 400-metre individual medley and 200-metre freestyle while Oriwol captured gold in the 400-metre medley and silver in the 200-medley and 400-metre freestyle. Also competing and medalling at spring nationals was Beaconsfield’s Karah Stanworth Belleville, who earned silver and bronze, respectively, in the 200- and 100-metre backstroke. With only four girls competing, including Gabrielle Soucisse and Émilie Belleau, the Bluefins finished fifth in points among women’s teams and eighth overall, while Pointe Claire finished fifth among men’s teams and 10th overall.+
